When devices and systems, including smart equipment, communicate with each other and automatically make adjustments, the result is known as "machine-to-machine" (M2M) communication, an intelligent network that holds significant potential for facility management. M2M technology is an important reason the Internet of Things (IoT) is making connected buildings more intelligent, safe and sustainable.

Many M2M communications occur now. For instance, when many commercial smoke detectors sense smoke, they automatically communicate with the fire alarm system, which can sound and let the occupants know to evacuate. What's more, M2M communications promise to improve facility managers' ability to take action on data in real time and can make everyday building operations more efficient. These solutions can handle many of the repetitive, manual tasks inherent in operating a complex building. That can keep minor operating hiccups from escalating, and allow facility managers to focus on more serious issues that require their time, attention, and expertise.

As buildings become more connected and intelligent, smart equipment, integrated systems and building controls are enabling more M2M communication and allowing building and owners more freedom to concentrate on improvement and efficiency.
